Yoga Biography
1994 I began classes with Sara Leathes in Petersfield.
1998 I began study of Yoga Philosophy reading texts that my wife was studying on her 3-year BWY Diploma course. Immediately began aligning what I was reading with contemporary Western psychological theory and philosophy. Hugely impressed.
2002 I began 2-year MA research project looking at the effect of the voice on the mind/body/spirit complex. I developed a way of using the voice called Sounding, an improvisational way of singing from the heart that does not have pre-formed musical structures or words. This allows relaxation of the rational/egoic mind and access to what Western psychology calls the unconscious.
On researching the literature section of the degree I was opened up to deeper aspects of Yoga philosophy and I began to contemplate how Yoga philosophy, in particular the modifications of the mind, the klesas, might align with contemporary Western psychological Transpersonal theory. I began to see how a therapist might employ Yoga philosophy in order to assist healing – the movement towards well-being. I was able to address this in the research group I set up and that aspect has continued in my group and one-to-one work to the present day.
2003 I initiated daily asana practice.
2004 I attended Nada Yoga 3-day Course at Mandala Yoga Ashram in Wales. This deepened my understanding of sound from a Yoga perspective. I also attended a Yoga Biomedical Trust Residential 6-day Pranayama Module led by Dr Shrikrishna. After this I began to include Yoga Nidra and pranayama into my daily practice.
2006 BWY Foundation Course – Tutor, Michael Hutchinson.
2007 I began working in a rehabilitation clinic for drug and alcohol abuse, Selhurst Clinic, in Farnborough using Yoga Nidra and Sounding in the process. During these sessions I began to include Yoga Philosophy in a teaching capacity.
2008 Taking the At-Ma project to the Yoga Show at Olympia in London, and subsequently to Yoga centres and festivals. A big move forward in taking the values and principles of Yoga out into the world, onto a larger platform.
2009 Registering with The Independent Yoga Network as a Nada Yoga Teacher. Integrating meditation into my daily practice, and beginning a course:
The Progressive Stages of Meditation Level 1 – Calm Abiding – Tutor, Maartin Vermaas
